Picture this; you are hosting a dinner party in the coming weeks. You have decided on your guest list, your menu and you have come to terms with the extraordinary amount of housework to be done before the day arrives. However, many people tend to neglect the art of setting ones table… Many of us have no idea how to do it correctly… Well we do, so stress no more.

Your table setting sets the bar for how your dinner party will go. If you are trying to impress your guests with an eloquent get together, or whether it’s just a casual catch-up, you must know how to assemble your place settings in the appropriate matter. So make yourself a cup of tea and let’s get started.

  1. Firstly, ensure you have enough cutlery to cater for the number of guests in attendance. Have extras on hand in case they are needed and to keep you away from the sink for the evening.

  2. Have all cutlery cleaned and polished.

  3. Realistically, very few of us have a full set of silverware ready and waiting for such occasions. You can have contrasting place settings or you can have each unique setting matching the one opposite it for example.

  4. Use the correct wine glasses.

  5. Have the table settings fully complete to ensure you can relax and entertain your guests for the evening.

  6. Consider your menu. This will enable you to anticipate in advance what cutlery will be required. For example, a spoon and knife will be required for soup. However, a knife and fork will be needed for a salad.

Don’t be afraid to change things up from the traditional settings.

  1. Wrapping the knives and forks in a nice napkin can also be stylish.

  2. Pick up some stylish pots and stack all cutlery in them. Have your napkins close by for guests to help themselves.

**This is ideal if you have guests arriving at different stages.

  1. Wondering how you will entertain children at your party? Why not encourage them to draw a picture of guests around the table. These pictures can then be used as place mats. It’s a win-win!

There are a few various ways to set your table for your dinner-party. Remember it is not compulsory to set your table to the level of a Michelin restaurant. However, just remember that your table setting will set the scene of how your meal will go. Tailor it to suit you and your guests.

Happy hosting! ☺
